This week I did a little DIY project using old shutters that were on our basement windows when we first moved in to our home. We are currently renovating our basement so we had no use for them anymore, but something was telling me not to get rid of them just yet! For this project I turned these ordinary shutters into a home decor piece. The paint I used to create this look is the brand Waverly Chalk paint. You can order it off of Amazon.

To apply the chalk paint I used just a regular paint brush and covered the whole thing with one coat. If you want to have just a solid color I would do two coats. (I suggest using a smaller paint brush to get into the cracks to make sure you have full coverage). If you’re going for a more rustic, farmhouse style like mine apply very light coats of either a white or gray chalk paint over your shutter after it has dried. I barely dip the ends of the paint brush in the paint and whisk over areas of the shutter in the same direction. There is no right or wrong way to doing this technique, it’s all about how much color you want to be able to see through the second color of chalk paint!
Below, I did a black matte chalk paint (One coat) and gently grazed over it with my paint brush and white chalk paint. For the white shutter, I used a gray top coat.
